Climate work in own production

We promote energy and material efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy in our own production.

We produce food in our production facilities in Finland and Poland. Emissions from our own operations arise from our production processes, heating and cooling of facilities, and work-related travel. These emissions fall under GHG Protocol scope 1 and 2 levels.

In our responsibility programme for 2026–2028, our goal is to reduce the absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions related to our own industrial operations and purchased energy by 42% from the 2022 baseline, in line with the short‑term targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The target also includes land‑use emissions related to the production of bioenergy raw materials and the carbon removals enabled by them.

The most significant emission reductions in our production facilities will be achieved by switching to lower‑emission energy sources for steam and heat production, such as biogas or electricity with guarantees of origin. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced through improvements in energy efficiency, heat recovery, electrification of production equipment, and the adoption of lower‑emission refrigerants. We are committed to the measures outlined in the Energy Efficiency Agreement of the Confederation of Finnish Industries.

Investments to reduce production emissions

We consider climate impacts in all our investment decisions. We continuously invest in production equipment, which also helps us reduce emissions from production. For example, we have invested in energy efficiency through several heat recovery projects. In Vantaa and Eura, we have replaced the use of natural gas with electricity in steam production. At the Forssa plant, we have invested in compressed‑air compressors controlled by AI‑based logic. In addition, we have increased the use of LED lighting in our premises and the number of charging stations for electric vehicles.

Promoting material efficiency

In addition to reducing climate emissions, we reduce other environmental impacts of our production by promoting material efficiency. Efficient use of materials significantly reduces our environmental footprint. We systematically reduce production losses, food waste and mixed waste, as well as utilise by-product material flows. Our production by-products are used as efficiently as possible by many other industries, such as the leather, feed and pet food industries. Unused materials of animal origin are used for biogas production. In Finland, we are committed to the material efficiency commitment of the food industry sector.

100% of electricity covered by guarantees of origin

In our production units, we only electricity, for which we have acquired guarantees of origin. The electricity is generated using renewable energy sources or nuclear power. In our production units, we systematically improve energy use and carry out energy audits to find ways to improve energy efficiency.
