Responsible procurement

Delicious products are made of high-quality raw materials. We operate openly following our responsible procurement principles throughout the supply chain.

Our supply chain is as short as possible. We use local meat and buy almost 100% of the animals directly from farmers in Finland. As we are in direct contact with our farmers, we know well the origin of meat and growing conditions of animals. Read more about animal welfare.

The poultry meat used in Kariniemen® products and the pork, beef, and poultry used in HK® products are 100% Finnish. The meat in products sold under the Via brand is also currently Finnish. In addition, we buy other raw materials, products and services mainly from our local markets.

Responsible procurement at HKFoods

HKFoods’ internal procurement policy defines the main principles of sustainable procurement at HKFoods. The policy is extended to the supply chain through the HKFoods Group’s Supplier Code of Conduct.

Supplier Code of Conduct

In order to become an approved supplier in HKFoods' supplier network, a supplier must commit to the HKFoods Group Supplier Code of Conduct, which forms part of the supply agreements. The Supplier Code of Conduct sets out requirements concerning good governance and ethical business practices, respect for human rights, workers’ rights and working conditions, product safety and quality, and environmental responsibility. HKFoods primarily works with suppliers that are committed to these or equivalent requirements.

HKFoods’ responsibility programme aims to have 100% of poultry farms, 100% of pig farms, 40% of cattle farms (100% of HKFoods quality farms) and 70% of other suppliers sign the Supplier Code of Conduct by the end of 2028. In 2025, the Supplier Code of Conduct had been signed by 72.3% of pig farms, 7.4% of cattle farms (18.7% of HKFoods quality farms), 51.3% of poultry farms and 26.5% of other suppliers.

Supplier approval and assessment

Supplier approval is based on predefined requirements and assessment procedures. As part of the supplier selection process, suppliers are required to complete category-specific questionnaires that are used to assess their ability to meet HKFoods’ requirements and to identify potential supply chain risks. The selection and assessment of suppliers take into account factors including animal welfare, product safety and quality, environmental responsibility, human and labour rights, occupational health and safety, data protection and information security, and business continuity management.

Risk management and supplier monitoring

HKFoods primarily sources products and services from approved suppliers. Supplier compliance is monitored, and supplier assessments are updated on a risk-based basis and using information obtained during the business relationship. The aim is to identify and manage supply chain risks and promote continuous improvement throughout the supplier network.

Preventing corruption and bribery

HKFoods has zero tolerance for corruption and bribery. All suspected misconduct reported to the company is handled in accordance with the applicable procedures.

Employees, suppliers and other stakeholders can report concerns or suspected misconduct through the HKFoods whistleblowing channel.
