Meat is a valuable protein source, and protecting it benefits both the environment and the consumer. Finnish meat industry companies HKFoods, Atria and Snellman have been developing smart packaging solutions for years, significantly reducing the amount of plastic used in their packaging.

The EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sets ambitious targets for recyclability. As a result, the position of nylon, a small but important component in food packaging, is being evaluated.

Together, we want to highlight the importance of looking at the bigger picture when assessing environmental impacts. Packaging functionality must be considered alongside recyclability. The role of nylon in food packaging must be safeguarded, as it plays a significant part in ensuring food safety, shelf life and the reduction of food waste. In addition, various studies show that nylon can be recycled with new recycling technologies.

We are collaborating with Advanced Packaging Association (APA) to ensure that key packaging functionalities are taken into account in future regulation. Watch our joint video to see how a small part of the package can be a big part of the solution.
